Natural Disaster

In August fire thickens the air
and yellows the hair of two girls

on the ground. One cradles the other
who is a crocus to her.

This is the old friendship.
The sirens call for them

to consummate it.
Even women and men hear it

now, as the church lungs drown,
planes fidget around. Opposites

get in the way.
The bishop wants someone to blame.
